Via Francigena South week 6 from Bari to Brindisi

Tour Plan

01

Day 1: Arrival in Bari

Arrival at the hotel, dinner and night.

02

Distance 23,9 km

Day 2: Bari - Mola di Bari

The vast internal plains are now behind us, from Bari we change pace and horizon; this stage, not demanding, introduces you to the coastal wonders that you encounter along the route up to Brindisi: seaside villages and splendid inlets, vestiges of the Via Traiana and medieval watchtowers, while in the hinterland you can admire trulli, historic farms and dry stone walls which frame the expanses of olive trees.

03

Distance 30 km

Day 3: Mola di Bari - Monopoli

The stage, long but without differences in altitude, is among the most evocative of the Apulian route. You walk close to a crystalline sea, through places of absolute beauty that offer delicious stops: from the coast of the trulli of Ripagnola to the scenic abbey of San Vito passing through Polignano a Mare, pearl of the Adriatic. A series of tiny and enchanting coves finally accompany us to the ancient port of Monopoli.

04

Distance 21 km

Day 4: Monopoli - Savelletri

A stage to be covered easily, enjoying the stops offered. The path, which winds between the coast and the hinterland, is rich in evidence of ancient pilgrimages: the castle-abbey of Santo Stefano, the rock churches and the paving of the Via Traiana of Egnazia, after which you will find the port of Savelletri. The lack of water and the only accommodation available upon arrival require good logistical organization: in this case it is advisable to continue up to Torre Canne.

05

Distance 9 km

Day 5: Savelletri - Torre Canne

Short stage, on asphalt, but immersed in the plain of centuries-old olive trees, a candidate for UNESCO world heritage: here are concentrated the oldest specimens of Puglia and farms that house underground oil mills from the Roman and medieval era. An authentic sacred place of Mediterranean civilization; once you reach your destination you find the sea again. There are no water sources along the route, so stock up well upon departure.

06

Distance 30,4 km

Day 6: Torre Canne - Torre Santa Sabina

A challenging stage whether you choose the main route or the coastal variant. In the first case you tackle 30 km, almost all on asphalt, but along quiet districts that wind through olive trees and farms; in the second you walk for 26 km on the sandy beaches and paths of the Dune Costiere Regional Natural Park. There are no water sources along the route, so stock up well upon departure.

07

Distance 32,4 km

Day 7: Torre Santa Sabina - Brindisi

This stage is also decidedly challenging due to its length and the high percentage of asphalt. In the first part you follow paths close to the sea up to the Torre Guaceto Nature Reserve, which you cross on a dirt road. Then continue on the new cycle/pedestrian path that leads to Brindisi. The arrival is exciting, capable of repaying the effort: on board a motorboat you reach the historic center and its Roman columns.
