Via Francigena WEEK 7

Via Francigena WEEK 7

From 650Euro per person

This week takes you through the scenic rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside. Walk down cypress-lined, winding roads in Val d’Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. After you cross the gorgeous vineyards & olive groves of Tuscany, you will enter the province of Lazio. Enjoy the volcanic lake at Bolsena, as well as the town’s notable 11th-century church. From there continue to Montefiascone, an ancient town with a thriving winemaking culture. This peaceful & beautiful journey is full of wonders – castles, palaces, towers, wineries – but also provides plenty of space & time to reflect.

San Quirico is difficult to reach as it has no railway station. The nearest train station is Buonconvento, from which a bus departs every 2-3 hours. However, we can easily arrange a private transfer from Buonconvento at your convenience. Waiting for you at your hotel will be all the material you need for your trip: hotel vouchers, a detailed description of the trail, the GPS maps, & the pilgrim’s “passport” (credenziale). You will also be told where to go to receive a benediction by a priest, should you desire one.

At your hotel, a package will be waiting for you containing all the material you need for the week: The credential – The hotels and meals vouchers – the detailed road books and waterproof GPS maps with a container and a map holder for the route.

Day 2 – San Quirico – Sant’Antimo

Because St Antimo abbey is one of the most beautiful places in Tuscany, we decided to walk an older version of the Francigena that doesn’t bypass it.. The route from San Quirico is entirely unpaved and partly on trails. It offers beautiful views of the Ripa d’Orcia castle and of the Orcia gorge. The last stretch climbs steadily among the Brunello vineyards. Distance: 14 km // Walking time: 4h

Day 3 – Sant’ Antimo - Rocca d'Orcia

There are trails which climb to the ridge overlooking the Orcia valley, however, depending on the season you may prefer the asphalt road as they are muddy and the “Crete” mud is a sticky clay. The view from the ridge is amazing and the small hamlet where you spend the night is charming. Distance: 19km // Walking time:5h30

Day 4 – Rocca d’ Orcia – Radicofani

You cannot avoid the last climb on the tarmac to Radicofani, one of the most important stops on the Francigena. In the shade of its imposing Tetennano fortress, it offers one of the most powerful landscapes of the whole route. Distance: 28km Walking time:6h30

Day 5 – Radicofani – Proceno

Partly unpaved to Ponte a Rigo partly paved on secondary roads and beautiful landscape. This high road overlooking the Cassia was the official way before the 16th century when the Bridge over the Paglia river was built. convince the lady of the house to give you a tour of Proceno castle. Distance: 25km // Walking time: 5h30m

Day 6 – Proceno – Bolsena

The main interest is the scenery once you come in view of the lake. Stop to visit the Basilica del Santo Sepolcro, The St Christina church in Bolsena built-in memory of the miracle that is at the origin of the catholic celebration of “Corpus Domini”. Distance : 29,7km // Walking time: 6h30m

Day 7 – Bolsena – Montefiascone

A short day along a route that offers nice views of the lake from the sourrounding hills.Possible detour : Civita di Bagnoregio, a spectacular ghost town perched on crumbling high cliff . A UNESCO protected site Distance 17km // Walking time:4h00m
