Sicily – A Land of Plenty

Sicily – A Land of Plenty

From 3200Euro per person

9-DAY WINE & FOOD TOUR FROM PALERMO TO CATANIA TASTE THE BEST WINES OF SICILY

Sicily is a feast for the senses. A mystical island between Africa & Europe, Sicily has inspired artists & writers for thousands of years. Homer wrote of Mount Etna, under which the one-eyed cyclops lived with his herd of sheep. Ovid recounts the freshwater spring of Syracuse, into which the Peloponnesian nymph Arethousa was transformed. Even William Shakespeare sang Sicily’s praises, a place where the “climate’s delicate, the air most sweet.”

Through its long history, Sicily has been inhabited by Phoenicians, Romans, Moors, Jews, Normans, French, Germans, Spanish & many more populations, all of which have influenced the unique culture of the island. The language, the art & architecture, & the cuisine all reflect this multicultural melting pot.

During our 9 days together, we will explore the island & its hidden gems. We’ll wander the ruins of a Greek temple & admire the decorative façade of a baroque theater. We’ll walk along sandy beaches & climb the tallest volcano in Europe. We’ll taste the freshest fish & the creamiest ricotta cannoli. And, of course, we’ll taste extraordinary wines: mineral rich Etna reds, floral & spicy Nero d’Avola, bright cherry Cerasuolo di Vittoria.

Day 2 - ANCIENT RUINS & ACIDIC REDS IN AGRIGENTO

We’ll start the day with a guided tour of the archeological site Valle dei Templi, a UNESCO World Heritage Site & arguably the best-preserved collection of ancient Greek art & architecture. After our archeological adventure, we’ll enjoy a light lunch on the vineyard of Feudo Butera, paired with wines from their cellar, after which we’ll enjoy a wine tasting of their finest vintages. In the afternoon we’ll head to Piazza Armerina, a small hilltop city known for its baroque & Norman architecture. There you can explore on your own, or head directly to the bed & breakfast where we will spend the night. Accommodation in a special B&B in town.

Day 3 - MOSAICS & CERAMICS (PIAZZA AMERINA, CALTAGIRONE, RAGUSA IBLA)

We’re off to Villa Romana del Casale first thing in the morning! A UNESCO World Heritage Site for its remarkable collection of Roman mosaics, including the famous “bikini girls,” Villa Romana del Casale is an unforgettable sight. Afterwards we will stop for lunch in Caltagirone, a small town famous for its artisan ceramics, which can be purchased in any one of the 120 or so workshops. We’ll have some time for shopping or a ceramics experience in Caltagirone, then continue onwards to an Azienda Agricola (farmer’s cooperative) in Gulfi or to a wine tasting of luscious Nero d’Avola & Cerasuolo di Vittoria. Then it’s off to bed in a XVIII century palace in Scicli.

Day 4 - HERBS & CHOCOLATE IN SCICLI & MODICA

This morning we will drive to meet Chiara who will guide us to our first cooking class in an amazing though remote location. We’ll eat lunch there enjoying a breathtaking view before our afternoon trip to Modica the town of chocolate. Then we’ll head to Modica for a paired wine-chocolate tasting. Modica is famous throughout Italy for its high-quality chocolates, which have been produced in the area from the 16th century, when the cocoa bean was first brought over to Europe. We will return to Scicli for dinner at the best restaurant in town. Night at the same hotel.

Day 5 - HIDDEN GEMS & ARTISAN CRAFTS IN RAGUSA

A private guide will take us around Ragusa & show us some unique places not otherwise open to the public, such as Cicolo di Conversazione, Teatro Donnafugata, & the walled-off gardens of Palazzo Arezzo Bertini. We’ll also meet an artisan cart-maker & visit his workshop. Lunch will be in town during the tour, where we’ll try the traditional cuisine of Ragusa paired with local wines. We’ll end our day with an aperitivo (cocktail with snacks) in Palazzo Bertini, overlooking the main piazza.

Day 6 - LEMONS & OLIVE OIL IN ORTIGIA & SIRACUSA

The morning will begin with a a real sicilian breakfast in Noto and a tour of the “Ghost town” of Noto antica to have a view of the town before it was destroyed by the earthquake On our way to Siracusa, we’ll stop en route at either an olive oil mill & lemon grove, or at a vineyard specializing in Nero d’Avola for a wine tasting. In Siracusa, we’ll tour the most ancient & charming part of the city, Ortigia, built upon a small peninsula jutting out into the water. We’ll wander the colorful artisan shops & limestone white baroque buildings, then dip into the labyrinthian Jewish quarter, where underground Jewish ritual baths were discovered dating back to the 6th century. Afterwards, you will have the rest of the afternoon free to shop & stroll. Dinner will be on your own, though we are happy to provide you with suggestions.
7

Day 7 - SEASIDE STROLLS & RELAX IN ORTIGIA

We will do an orientation tour in Ortigia, dipping into La Giudecca district, the maze of less touristy streets and the former Jewish Quarter for a peek at the ancient Jewish baths discovered by accident while renovating a boutique hotel. Afterwards we will have the rest of the afternoon free to shop and stroll leisurely (those who are interested can visit the archeological park and catacombs). Free lunch.

Day 8 - WINERY TOURS (CATANIA & ETNA)

We’ll leave Ortigia in the morning, driving along the coast up to Catania, where we will take a street food tour & explore the open-air market. From there, we will head to Etna Winery for a mid-afternoon wine tasting of Etna wines, which are quite unique given the volcanic minerals of the terroir. To finish the day, we’ll enjoy an elegant dinner with wine pairing at the Donna Carmela Resort, where we’ll spend the night.
