Via di Francesco – from Gubbio to Spello

The St Francis trail is not a pilgrimage route in the proper sense of the term. As a matter of fact, until a few years ago there were never pilgrims retracing St Francis steps. This trail simply links the places that were important in St Francis life.
Francesco, known for his humble and simple way of life, is nonetheless a revolutionary figure in the history of Christianity; in a time when the Church of Rome was the center of the Papacy’s temporal power – and known to amass huge riches, conspire duplicitous plots and abide corruption, he preached poverty and fraternal love towards every creature of this world.
The example set by St Francis’ life and a message was probably the inspiration for the new Pope to chose to be called Francis I.
You will start in La Verna Monasterythe place where St Francis is supposed to have received the « Stigmata » and end in Assisi, where he is buried. Along the way, you will pass several smaller monasteries and abbeys where the Saint stayed while travelling, as well as where legend says he accomplished miracles such as the taming of a ferocious wolf in Gubbio.

Tour Plan

01

Day 1: Arrival in Gubbio

Arriving in Gubbio, one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Italy will welcome you, with the wonderful Piazza Grande overlooking the panorama of the valley below, the Palazzo dei Consoli from which the Ceri of the most famous festival in Umbria depart and the Roman Amphitheatre at the foot of the glues.

02

Distance 22 km

Day 2: Gubbio - Castello di Biscina

On your second day, you will start with a quite challenging walk, full of ups and downs ending near an ancient castle that overlooks the Chiascio valley. The castle is an imposing ruin that can be freely visited.

03

Distance 15,8 km

Day 3: Biscina - Valfabbrica

A fairly short day that unfolds, mostly downhill, along the Chiascio valley. Unfortunately, this valley has been spoiled by the construction of a large dam which has then proved unusable because badly built. The view of the meandering river from the surrounding hill is still striking. Valfabbrica is a lively little town where you can stop for a cappuccino before reaching your hotel outside town along the trail.

04

Distance 13,7 km

Day 4: Valfabbrica - Assisi

The beginning is a bit tough then it becomes easier. Rolling hills and thick woods and an amazing arrival with a breathtaking view of Assisi. While in the first part the landscape is still rugged and sparsely inhabited, the southern slopes are covered by the first olive groves.

The farmhouse just outside the walls of Assisi offers a refreshing dip in a beautiful swimming pool.
05

3 hours of walking

Day 5: Assisi - Assisi

A relaxing day. If you want to walk you can have a 3 hours loop Have a brisk departure by climbing to the Eremo delle Carceri, S. Francis peaceful retreat. At the top of the trail 500 meters from the Eremo there is a nice picnic spot with tables and benches. Otherwise just visit Assisi, which has a lot more to offer than the St Francis Basilica, although the Giotto’s frescos are superb.

06

Distance 13,7 km

Day 6: Assisi - Spello

Follow the Via degli Ulivi, on the southwestern side of Mount Subasio. A relaxing route, with little difference in height and many water points, on a privileged view of the Umbrian Valley. You arrive from above in Spello, all to be discovered with its historical, artistic and architectural treasures.
