Day 1: Siena - Buonconvento
You will follow a winding route for most of the day until you reach the “Grancia di Cuna” an ancient food storage place fortified to protect it during the never-ending wars between towns in the Middle Ages. It also provided shelter for the pilgrims. Here, the lady that does your luggage transfer will pick you up and take you to your hotel in Buonconvento.

Day 2: Buonconvento - San Quirico
The last third of the road follows the old Cassia on easy terrain. San Quirico was one of the most important stops on the way to Rome and has some of the most interesting buildings in the area with the Collegiata and the remains of an ancient pilgrims hospital.

Day 3: San Quirico - Castelnuovo dell'Abate (Sant'Antimo)
Because St Antimo abbey is one of the most beautiful places in Tuscany, we decided to walk an older version of the Francigena that doesn’t bypass it. The route from San Quirico is entirely unpaved and partly on trails. It offers beautiful views of the Ripa d’Orcia castle and of the Orcia gorge. The last stretch climbs steadily among the Brunello vineyards.

Day 4: Castelnuovo dell'Abate - Castiglion d'Orcia
There are trails which climb to the ridge overlooking the Orcia valley, however, depending on the season you may prefer the asphalt road as they are muddy, and the “Crete” mud is a sticky clay. The view from the ridge is amazing and the small hamlet where you spend the night is charming.

Day 5: Castiglione d'Orcia - Radicofani
You cannot avoid the last climb on the tarmac to Radicofani, one of the most important stops on the Francigena. In the shade of its imposing Tetennano fortress, it offers one of the most powerful landscapes of the whole route.

Day 6: Radicofani - Proceno
Partly unpaved to Ponte a Rigo partly paved on secondary roads and beautiful landscape. This high road overlooking the Cassia was the official way before the 16th century when the Bridge over the Paglia river was built. Convince the lady of the house to give you a tour of Proceno castle.

Day 7: Transfer to Orvieto
Take your time to visit this wonderful museum city, perched on a cliff and rich in monuments such as the Duomo, the Pozzo di San Patrizio, the fascinating subterranean Orvieto, the Etruscan and medieval remains.
